ME AND MY PHOTOGRAPHY

Picture

How did i get interested in Landscape Photography?

It all started for me really after the birth of my Daughter in 1999 when i decided to buy my first digital camera to capture those early precious memories of her growing up.
I snapped away for a few years like most proud fathers would i guess but eventually the novelty
started to wear off and the camcorder took over.

Instead of letting the camera go to waste i started taking it with me when i walked the dog around the countryside and onto the
Quantock Hills near to where i live in Taunton.

I enjoyed photographing the countryside and views realising that i was much better at Landscape Photography
as apposed to photographing family members.

I then started following well known Landscape Photographers through the internet and books
realising that i wanted to be like them.

I found myself wanting to get out more and more to photograph Landscape, trying out various techniques
such as using the rule of thirds and finding interesting lead-in lines for framing images.

I eventually decided to join a local photographic club even though i was a tad scared at the time but i had some encouraging remarks
about my work which gave me even the confidence to continue pushing myself more and more.
I am currently in a transition period between my full time Electrical Engineer's role and my Landscape Photography business
which has been building over time with the final goal of becoming a full time pro.

"It started as a hobby, which eventually turned into a passion, but has now become a way of life".

Why do i do it?
and
What fuels my passion for Landscape Photography?
Picture

Often i get asked these two questions.

People say to me that i must be nuts setting my alarm for 3 or 4 am in the morning and then

travelling for sometimes hours to a location for Sunrise.

For most people this is a crazy thing to do but Landscape photographers are a strange breed being awake when

most people are asleep and then often sleeping during the day when the majority of people are awake.

I do it because i absolutely love being awake before first light and seeing those beautiful transitions of colour from

the cool blue tones of 5000 Kelvin and over which gradually become warmer as the Kelvins drop and the sun gets

closer to the horizon.

Eventually nature greets you with that warmer light as the golden hour kicks in, this moment is what the majority of

Landscape Photographers crave for.

The sun finally starts to appear breaking over the horizon and filling the Landscape with splashes of warm golden

light illuminating the land giving texture and shadow to the Landscape.

It's these short periods of time that gives me such a buzz and has become such an addiction to me.

Its a big challenge trying your utmost to work with the light to capture that single moment in time especially in

sometimes difficult weather conditions.

These fleeting moments can literally be seconds which makes the whole process so addictive to me and makes

me want to continue photographing over and over again.

What fuels my passion regarding Landscape Photography really is the whole process from capturing that one

moment  to printing the image to paper.

Only then am i happy looking at the print knowing that the whole process had been achieved by myself which i find

very rewarding.

I'm inspired by the equipment too as Sigma especially look for new innovations in their sensor and camera designs

which are often unique and renders a different look to images compared to the conventional Bayer sensor.

This i find interesting as new sensor designs often means tweaks to my processing workflow to attempt

to get the very best out of the Foveon sensor.

All of these things continuously keeps me looking for better ways of doing things wether it's

new locations to visit, better ways to process images or working with clients wanting tuition there's

always something that keeps me interested.
